Brief communication: Is vertical shear in an ice shelf (still) negligible?

چکیده
Abstract. Vertical shear is recognized today as a key component of the stress balance ice shelves. However, first shelf models were built on neglect vertical shear. Partly due to its historical treatment, it remains common discuss though still considered negligible in models. Here, we offer perspective changing treatment over time, and emphasize term's non-negligibility current modeling. We illustrate our discussion simplest context an analytic, isothermal, shallow-ice-shelf model.

Brief Communication: Newly developing rift in Larsen C Ice Shelf presents significant risk to stability
An established rift in the Larsen C Ice Shelf, formerly constrained by a suture zone containing marine ice, grew rapidly during 2014 and is likely in the near future to generate the largest calving event since the 1980s and result in a new minimum area for the ice shelf. Here we investigate the recent development of the rift, quantify the projected calving event and, using a numerical model, as...
متن کاملICESat’s new perspective on ice shelf rifts: The vertical dimension
[1] The small footprint ( 70 m) and 172 m alongtrack spacing of the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) on the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) provides unprecedented horizontal resolution for a satellite altimeter. This enables ICESat to map many previously unresolved features on ice shelves, such as crevasses, rifts, grounding zones and ice fronts. We present examples of ...

متن کاملIce Shelf Water plume flow beneath FilchnerRonne Ice Shelf, Antarctica
[1] A two-dimensional plume model is used to study the interaction between FilchnerRonne Ice Shelf, Antarctica and its underlying ocean cavity. Ice Shelf Water (ISW) plumes are initiated by the freshwater released from a melting ice shelf and, if they rise, may become supercooled and deposit marine ice due to the pressure increase in the in situ freezing temperature. The aim of this modeling st...
متن کاملUsing distributed temperature sensors to monitor an Antarctic ice shelf and sub-ice-shelf cavity
Monitoring of ice-shelf and sub-ice-shelf ocean temperatures represents an important component in understanding ice-sheet stability. Continuous monitoring is challenging due to difficult surface access, difficulties in penetrating the ice shelf, and the need for long-term operation of nonrecoverable sensors. We aim to develop rapid lightweight drilling and near-continuous fiber-optic temperatur...
